ALGIERS, March 9 (Reuters) - The heaviest rain in decades
hit Algeria's Sahara desert killing at least three people while
four others are still missing, state media said on Wednesday.
Floods and landslides destroyed dozens of houses and shut
some key roads in the Amguel area deep in the Sahara province of
Tamanrasset 1,900 km (1,200 miles) south of the capital, an
Algerian civil defence official told state radio.
"The toll is three dead, and we are searching for the four
missing," the official said. Government newspaper El Moudjahid
said it was the worst rain to hit the area in 45 years, but did
not give any rainfall figures.
